The Music Department has been an integral part of Rockville High School since it opened in 1968. Over the years, the RHS Music Ensembles have established a tradition of excellence through their performances around Montgomery County and beyond.

Currently, the Music Department offers the following options for the students of Rockville High School

Class Offerings

Concert Band (MCPS Course Code 6821/6822)


Woodwind, brass, and percussion players may elect to take Concert Band with the director’s approval. Students in this course will develop and refine their technical skills in preparation for moving on to the Symphonic Band. Public performances during and after school hours are required to meet the course objectives. Opportunities to perform in extracurricular music activities, such as Marching Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, and chamber music groups will be made available to all students in the Concert Band. An audition with the director is required before registering for this course.



Concert Orchestra (MCPS Course Code 6851/6852)

String players may elect to take Concert Orchestra with the director’s approval. Students in this course will develop and refine their technical skills in preparation for moving on to the Symphonic Orchestra. Public performances during and after school hours are required to meet the course objectives. Opportunities to perform in extracurricular music activities, such as Marching Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, and chamber music groups will be made available to all students in the Concert Orchestra. Honors Jazz Ensemble (MCPS Course Code 6873/6874)

Students who have performed with the Jazz Ensemble for at least one year may apply to take the class for Honors-level credit. The Honors curriculum requires significant individual work outside of the normal class, including a research/composition project, an individual performace jury/exam, and at least 40 hours of extracurricular musical activities. The Honors curriculum is recommended for students who are seriously interested in pursuing music as a career after high school. An application must be submitted and approved by the director before registering for this course.



Honors Symphonic Band (MCPS Course Code 6828/6829)

Students who have performed with the Symphonic Band for at least one year may apply to take the class for Honors-level credit. The Honors curriculum requires significant individual work outside of the normal class, including a research/composition project, an individual performace jury/exam, and at least 40 hours of extracurricular musical activities. The Honors curriculum is recommended for students who are seriously interested in pursuing music as a career after high school. Jazz Ensemble (MCPS Course Code 6871/6872)

Students may elect to take Jazz Ensemble with the director’s approval. Openings in the Jazz Ensemble are dictated by needed instrumentation. Students in this course develop a high level of skill in improvisation and the performance of different jazz styles, including swing, blues, latin, rock, funk, and ballads. Public performances during and after school hours are required to meet the course objectives. Students in the Jazz Ensemble may also be required to participate in performances with the Symphonic Band, Symphonic Orchestra or Concert Band. Opportunities to perform in extracurricular music activities, such as Marching Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, and chamber music groups will be made available to all students in the Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, students in the Jazz Ensemble are strongly encouraged to take part in county and state honors auditions and other public performance opportunities. An audition with the director is required before registering for this course.

Symphonic Band (MCPS Course Code 6826/6827)

Additionally, students in the Symphonic Band are strongly encouraged to take part in county and state honors auditions, solo and ensemble festivals, and other public performance opportunities. An audition with the director is required before registering for this course.
