Music Open House

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon -  Brass Master Class

Master class – all students welcome!  Trumpet soloist and Howard University Music Department Chair, Chris Royal, will work with students from the program.  Mr. Royal has been a featured soloist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble, the Baltimore Jazz Orchestra, and the Soulful Symphony.

10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  -  String Master Class

Master class – all students welcome!  A String Quartet from “The President’s Own” US Marine Chamber Orchestra, members include Gunnery Sergeant Regino Madrid, violin; Gunnery Sergeant Erika Sato, violin; Staff Sergeant Sarah Hart, viola; Staff Sergeant Charlie Powers, cello.  This skilled group of musicians will work with a number of students and also present a performance of part of all of Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet.

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon  -  Petting Zoo

Instrument petting zoo for all students exploring which instrument to learn.  Opportunity to sign up for classes and register with the program, or just come by to check out the instruments for fun!

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.  -  Tchaik 4 Reading Session

Open to all advanced-level students.  Students from around the metropolitan area will come together for a rousing, exciting reading of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.  If you are interested in joining us for the reading session, please go to and take a look at the parts.  If you can play the part, come join the fun!  Bring a friend or two as well!

3:00 p.m. – (by appointment)  -  Audition Opportunities

Students interested in auditioning to be placed in one of the programs 9 major ensembles (orchestra or wind ensemble) have the opportunity to audition.  The DC Youth Orchestra Program does NOT charge students to audition for the program.  (New beginners do not need to audition for placement.)
